Welcome Home

The House and Room Selection application portal opens in Axess on April 3 and applications are due April 22!

Stanford uses a self-select model for autumn undergraduate housing assignments to specific houses and rooms. This way of selecting housing increases transparency in the process and gives students more agency by allowing them to make decisions in real time based on exactly what is available when it is their time to pick a house and room. Read on for important details about what you need to do in order to secure 2024-25 undergraduate housing.

New - More Choice in the Assignment Process

In late summer 2023, the provost appointed students, faculty, and staff to the Neighborhood Task Force, which was charged with recommending changes and enhancements to the undergraduate neighborhood model. The task force’s recommendations were approved by the Provost in January 2024. These changes significantly improve the options available to students in House and Room Selection.

Specifically, the task force’s changes include:

House and Room Selection - How It Works

What if I’m not available at my gate time?

If you are a member of a group, any of your groupmates will be able to act as a proxy and select an assignment for you beginning at your gate time. Groups may want to appoint one person in the group to be the proxy for everyone in the group in order to make selecting easier. More information about selecting as a proxy for a groupmate will be included in your gate time email which will be sent on Thursday, May 23.

To submit your House and Room Selection application:

Sophomore-priority Spaces

As mentioned above, rising sophomores who participate in House and Room Selection will select first in House and Room Selection but will only be able to select sophomore-priority spaces. Rising sophomores should assume that all one room doubles, triples, and quads in non-theme RF residence halls will be sophomore-priority rooms. There will be no sophomore-priority spaces on the Row, in Mirrielees or EVGR-A, or in the suites.

The number and location of sophomore-priority rooms is dependent upon how many sophomores are selected to live in preassigned houses such as themes, co-ops, and Greek communities. Depending on the number of sophomores who preassign to academic themes, co-ops, and Greek houses, there may be a small number of two-room doubles in RF residence halls available as sophomore-priority spaces during House and Room Selection.

Please note that sophomore-priority does not mean sophomore-only. If there are any sophomore-priority spaces remaining after sophomores have selected, those spaces will be available for juniors and seniors. Likewise, if a sophomore in a sophomore-priority space leaves mid-year, that space could be assigned to a junior or senior.

Changes to Residences

The following residence changes will occur beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.

Gender Identification

In order to make the housing assignment process more inclusive, students will be asked to select one of three gender options on their housing application.

The gender options are:

The gender option you choose is up to you, and you will have the ability to change your gender identification each year when you apply for housing. Please note that you will not be able to change your gender for this year after the housing application closes on April 22. If you have concerns about your gender identification after April 22, please contact Housing Assignments.

All rooms will be coded in one of four ways.

When you enter the self-select system, you will only be able to see the rooms that match your gender identification and the gender inclusive rooms. For example, if you select Female as your gender identification, you will only see female rooms and gender inclusive rooms.

Any student, regardless of gender, can select a gender-inclusive room. This means a gender inclusive room could be populated with students who have different or the same genders. For example, a gender inclusive double room could be selected by a male and female student, a male and non-binary/fluid student, a female and non-binary/fluid student, two male students, two female students, or two non-binary/fluid students.

You should not select a gender inclusive room unless you are comfortable living with someone of any gender identity. Even if you select the room with a friend, if the friend cancels or moves out later, they could be replaced with a roommate of ANY gender identity.

While gender inclusive housing options will be available throughout undergraduate housing, not all houses have gender inclusive bathrooms. A list of houses with gender inclusive bathrooms is available here.

Please note that gender inclusive housing is not for couples. Undergraduate students in long-term, intimate, committed relationships are welcome to apply for couples graduate housing.

Please note that individual housing application gender data is for housing assignment use only and your specific gender selection will not flow into any non-housing systems. Anonymized and aggregated housing application gender data may be shared with Stanford Institutional Research & Decision Support (IRDS).

Groups and Roommate Finding

On your application, you will be able to form a group by clicking “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application. Groups can be composed of up to four students. If you are the first of your group to apply, you will establish a group name and password. If you are joining a group, you will enter the name and password established by the first group member to apply.

As mentioned above, since sophomores pick first in House and Room Selection but can only pick from sophomore-priority rooms, sophomores can only form groups with other sophomores. Juniors and seniors can form groups together but groups with a mix of class year cohorts will select their houses and rooms with the lowest cohort. Therefore, a group made up of juniors and seniors would select with the junior cohort.

If you are a sophomore who wishes to live in the same house as a junior or senior, you should select a sophomore priority space in a house that also has singles and two-room doubles. After selecting, let your junior/senior friend know so they can try to obtain a room in that house at their gate time. Click here to see a chart of all undergraduate residences, including the room types available in each house.

Although the deadline to apply for House and Room Selection is April 22, most students will be able to edit the group information on their housing applications until 8 a.m. on May 20. Students in groups with one or more people requesting a medical accommodation or submitting a religious observance request cannot make any group changes after April 22.

NEW THIS YEAR - ROOMMATE FINDING

This year, the House and Room Selection application is moving to a new platform, which allows for additional functionality. On your application, you will be asked to answer a series of profile questions. These questions can help you if you do not currently have a housing group and are looking to find someone with whom to form a group. While everyone is required to answer the questions, you can choose to hide this information from other students.

To use the roommate finding function, select “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application and then click “Suggest Roommates.” Based on your responses, you will see a compatibility percentage for other students who have submitted applications and chosen not to keep their profile information hidden. The number of students visible in roommate finding will increase as more students submit applications. While students’ names are not visible in roommate finding, you can see students’ gender identity and cohort, as well as their responses to the profile questions. If you would like to form a group with someone, you can send them a message through the housing system in order to introduce yourself. To check for received messages, click the hamburger menu next to Home and select “Messages.” Please note that messages sent through the housing portal are accessible to R&DE Student Housing Assignments. Please exercise caution if you mutually determine to communicate outside of the housing portal.
